Ahmedabad: Gujarat Titans defeated Delhi Capitals by 7 wickets in the 35th match of IPL 2025 on the back of a match-winning partnership of 119 runs for the third wicket between Jos Buttler (97 not out) and Sherfane Rutherford (43). In the match played on Saturday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Delhi lost the toss and batted first and scored 203 runs for 8 wickets, which Gujarat achieved by losing 3 wickets.
Delhi needed 10 runs to win in the last over and had 7 wickets left in hand. Mitchell Starc bowled the 20th over of the innings. But Rahul Tewatia hit a six off Starc's very first ball and put Gujarat on the path to victory. Tewatia then hit a four off the next ball to give Gujarat a historic win.
This is Gujarat's fifth win in seven matches. The team has now reached the first position in the points table with 10 points. At the same time, Delhi Capitals have suffered their second defeat in 7 matches. Delhi is also at the second position with 10 points.
This is the first time in the history of IPL that Gujarat's team has achieved a target of more than 200. At the same time, Delhi's team has not been able to defend more than 200 runs for the first time. For Gujarat, Butler hit 11 fours and 4 sixes in 54 balls while Rutherford hit 1 four and 3 sixes in 34 balls. Apart from him, Sai Sudarshan scored 36 and Rahul Tewatia scored 11 not out.
Earlier, fast bowler Prasidh Krishna (4 wickets for 41 runs) performed brilliantly for Gujarat Titans, but despite this, Delhi Capitals' team, moving towards a big score, could only score 203 runs for eight wickets. After being invited to bat, Delhi Capitals looked to be heading towards a big score on many occasions but the home team's bowlers bounced back on every occasion and kept the batsmen in check.
Captain Akshar Patel contributed 39 runs and Ashutosh Sharma contributed 37 runs. Tristan Stubbs and Karun Nair scored 31-31 runs. For Gujarat Titans, Mohammad Siraj (one wicket for 47 runs) gave away 16 runs in his first over while in his second spell he took one wicket for 14 runs in two overs.
Experienced fast bowler Ishant Sharma took one wicket for 19 runs in three overs. Spinner Sai Kishore bowled just the last over in which he allowed Delhi Capitals to score just nine runs and took one wicket in the form of Ashutosh Sharma. If Ashutosh had stayed firm, this score could have been big.
In the top order of Delhi Capitals, Abhishek Porel (23) scored 16 runs in Siraj's first over, which included two fours and a six. Porel looked to be moving towards a big score but in the next over, he was dismissed by playing an over-pitched ball of Arshad Khan into the hands of Siraj at mid-on. Then KL Rahul (28 runs, 14 balls) and Nair (18 balls) added 35 runs for the second wicket in which some brilliant shots were hit.
Rahul hit a six at long off on Siraj's ball and Karun hit a wonderful six on Arshad's ball. But Krishna got his Karnataka teammate caught by Arshad at wide third man with a fast yorker. Then Stubbs and Patel made a good partnership of 53 runs for the fifth wicket for the visiting team.
Rashid Khan dropped the catch of Stubbs on his own ball. But after some time he was caught by Krishna on Siraj's ball. Krishna then took an important wicket by dismissing Akshar who had settled down at the crease. Ashutosh Sharma (19 balls, two fours, three sixes) played some great shots till the end. But he got out in the last over.
