Damoh.  The continuously rising incidents of theft at the Damoh Agricultural Produce Market have heightened the concerns of traders and farmers alike. Serious questions are being raised regarding the security arrangements within the market premises, while significant resentment is evident among traders concerning the inaction of those responsible.
A theft that occurred within the market premises on the night of May 18 was captured on CCTV cameras. The footage shows thieves fearlessly entering the market, stealing grain, and making an easy escape. Following this incident, outrage among the trading community regarding the market's security arrangements has intensified further.
Traders allege that the market premises have long served as a hub for the activities of anti-social elements. Suspicious individuals are frequently seen moving about during the night, yet the security measures appear to be merely a formality. They state that despite submitting numerous complaints and memorandums on multiple occasions, neither has surveillance been increased, nor has an effective curb been placed on the incidents of theft.
Speculation is also rife within the market area that certain elements involved in the disorder and thefts enjoy political patronage. Although this has not been officially confirmed, these rumors have further heated up the business environment.
Narendra Bajaj, President of the Dal Mill, Oil Mill, and Grain Traders' Association, reacted strongly to the incident, stating that the persistent thefts occurring in the market constitute a matter of extreme gravity. He warned that if the administration and market management fail to take concrete action soon, the traders will be compelled to shut down the market and launch a vigorous protest.
He asserted that when the entire crime is being captured on CCTV cameras—and yet the thieves remain emboldened—it serves as a clear indication that the market's security system has failed completely.
The recurring incidents have sparked immense outrage among both farmers and traders. All eyes are now fixed on the administration to see what steps will ultimately be taken to curb these thefts and take action against the culprits.
