Damoh, Now that the process for the assembly general elections 2023 has started. As a journalist, election history is also coming to my mind. The first general elections after independence were held in 1952. The first MLA from Damoh seat was Shri Harishchandra Marothi. He was a renowned lawyer and freedom fighter of his time.
Harishchandra Marothi was born in Damoh in 1915. His father Shri Laxmichandra Marothi was a big businessman and a wealthy person. Harishchandra ji had his schooling in Damoh. He is a B.Sc. from Jabalpur. A. And L. l. B. After completing his graduation, he started practicing in Damoh court. He joined the Quit India Movement of 1942. He served three months of jail sentence in Amravati jail. When the first general elections were held after independence in 1952, Congress made him its candidate from Damoh seat. He won the election and became a member of the Legislative Assembly of CP & Berar Pradesh. Then the capital of our state was Nagpur. New Madhya Pradesh was formed in 1956. He was again elected from Damoh in the 1957 assembly elections. In 1962, Congress gave ticket to Marothi ji for the third consecutive time. This time there was dissatisfaction against Marothi ji in the Congress party itself. Congress leader Shri Chandranarayan Tandon rebelled and contested the elections as an independent candidate. Shri Sitaram Shendey was the candidate from Jan Sangh. But Anand Kumar Srivastava left his journalism job in Jabalpur and came to Damoh and contested the assembly elections. Anand Bhaiya himself was a dynamic speaker and also had the political legacy of his late father Shri Dwarka Prasad Srivastava. Dwarka Prasad ji was the popular president of Damoh Municipality for a long time and ultimately Anand Srivastava created history by winning as an independent.
After this defeat, Marothi ji's political career came to an end. Shri Harishchandra Marothi died on 19 October 1975. Remembrance of the first MLA of our area Shri Marothi ji. Greetings.
