Patna, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Income Tax Department Deputy Commissioner Vijendra along with his colleague Dinesh Kumar Agarwal. Vijendra is accused of thwarting the faceless income tax assessment scheme. According to the allegation, the accused collected confidential information related to the scheme and took bribe. Let us tell you that in this sequence, on 6 February 2025, the CBI raided Delhi, Mumbai, Thane, West Champaran, Bengaluru and Kerala in this case. Let us also tell you here that Dinesh Kumar Agarwal has contested the election as an independent candidate from Valmiki Nagar parliamentary constituency.

According to the information received, during the CBI raid, many objectionable documents, evidence of bribe and some digital electronic evidence were also found. It is said that the CBI had started an investigation on the basis of a complaint received from the Income Tax Department and on getting evidence, a case was registered against a Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax Department, two inspectors, 5 chartered accountants and a private person along with other unknown people. After this, raids were conducted in many cities of different states of the country.

What is the Faceless Scheme?

The Union Finance Ministry has started a 'Faceless' scheme to prevent corruption along with increasing transparency. It is called 'faceless' because the taxpayer does not need to go to the officer who assesses his tax. The said person will not even know who that officer is. Obviously, this scheme has been implemented as an exercise to reduce corruption.

CBI had also taken action on NHAI bribery

Let us tell you that recently, the CBI had caught the manager of NHAI in Patna red-handed taking a bribe of Rs 15 lakh under similar corruption charges. During the search, Rs 1.18 crore cash was recovered from them. The CBI had told that National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) General Managers (GM) Ram Preet Paswan, Barun Kumar, Chetan Kumar were made the main accused. After this action, there was a stir in the NHAI office.

NHAI arrested senior officers in bribery case

It is worth noting that the CBI's action is also going on on the complaints being received continuously. Earlier, in the case of NHAI itself, three years ago on 24 September 2022, the CGM and DGM of NHAI were arrested in Patna along with the employees of two private companies in a bribery case. At that time, the CBI team recovered about Rs 76 lakh in cash and jewelry. Then the CBI team raided the locations of Ram Kripalu Singh Construction Company in many states including Bihar.
