According to the Paris prosecutor's office, a member of the Australian Olympic field hockey team was detained after attempting to buy cocaine. The office said in a statement that police stopped the drug transaction outside a building in Paris on Tuesday night. He said that the matter has been handed over to the anti-drug unit of the police for investigation. Prosecutors said the alleged buyer was a 28-year-old member of the Australian field hockey team and the 17-year-old alleged seller was also detained.
The Australian Olympic Committee said in a statement that no charges have been filed and said it was arranging assistance for the team member. Australian officials and Paris prosecutors have not released the player's name. The Australian men's and women's teams were eliminated in the quarterfinals at the Paris Olympics. The men's team won a silver medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
