The company had applied for bankruptcy proceedings
Low-cost airline GoFirst (originally GoAir) had applied to initiate insolvency proceedings in early May this year. The company had been battling engine problems for some time, which had resulted in the grounding of a large number of its aircraft. On 2 May, GoFirst canceled its flights and filed for voluntary bankruptcy before the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), alleging delay on the part of Pratt & Whitney, a US-based engine manufacturer, due to its inability to meet obligations promptly – which led to the grounding of a portion of its fleet.
4200 employees are employed in the company
On May 10, the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) granted a stay and appointed an Interim Resolution Professional (IRP). Then on June 9, the committee of creditors (CoC) appointed Shailendra Ajmera as the resolution professional (RP) for GoFirst, which was subsequently approved by the NCLT. The airline has around 4,200 employees, and it reported a total revenue from operations of Rs 4,183 crore in the financial year 2021-22. There were reports that the discontinuation of GoFirst's flights had put pressure on airfares, especially on select routes it had access to.
