41 people lost their lives in Sikkim flood, 1200 houses washed away
Search for 15 military personnel continues, relief efforts intensified
Sikkim Floods Update: So far 41 people have died in the sudden floods in Sikkim. About 1200 houses were washed away. While 103 people including 15 army personnel are being searched. Officials said rescue teams were working to rescue people trapped under debris and mud on the third day of the disaster. About 25 thousand people have been affected in this natural disaster.
At the same time, Indian Express in its report has quoted Chief Minister PS Tamang as saying that so far 19 bodies have been recovered in Sikkim. Apart from this, officials said that 22 bodies were found in the lower districts of North Bengal. He also told that 26 people are admitted in the hospital and about 1500 people are in relief camps.
Search continues for 15 army personnel
Indian Army soldiers have also been hit by the floods in Sikkim. Search is on for 15 missing army soldiers in the lower part of Teesta Barrage. The bodies of seven of his companions were recovered recently. Army vehicles and shops are being dug out at the incident site in Burdang near Singtam. Additional teams of Tricolor Mountain Rescue (TMR), an army-affiliated organization, sniffer dogs and special radar have been pressed into service to assist in the search operation.
Two people died and six were injured after touching a mortar floating in the Teesta in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district. After this, the police, army and administration have issued statements prohibiting people from going near or touching any explosive or army hardware. Also, if any such material is seen, it has also been asked to inform about it at the nearest police station.
Central government approves relief fund
Apart from all this, the Central Government has approved the release of advance amount of Rs 44.80 crore from the State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF) to Sikkim. Besides, a central team has also been formed to take stock of the damage caused in the state. Agencies are also conducting surveys to assess the damage caused by the floods and plan to restore road connectivity. Road connectivity between Singtam and Burdang was also restored.
